Does My Child HAVE to Study a Modern Foreign Language at GCSE if they Have Dyslexia?

Sophie was trying to decide which subjects to select for her GCSE's.

Being a talented singer and musician with a passion for performing, she desperately wanted to take both Music and Drama.

But the school’s GCSE handbook clearly stipulated that pupils must take a Modern Foreign Language which meant Sophie had to make a very difficult choice.

Music or Drama?

Sophie found languages really hard. Her dyslexia caused enough challenges when trying to commit her ideas to paper in English, let alone having to try and do this in another language!

Sophie was becoming increasingly frustrated. She knew where her strengths lay but felt very stuck and very unhappy as she wasn't able to follow them both.

Alice, her mum, didn't have the solution so called me to see if I might be able to help.

I asked her a simple question.

Could Sophie be dis-applied from studying languages because of her dyslexia?

If she could, this would allow her to study both Music and Drama.

Alice didn’t know but spoke with school that very same morning.

The answer was YES!

Alice and Sophie were overjoyed.

Their frustration melted away.

One simple question and one simple answer changed Sophie’s future.
